Each pillar explains the problem it addresses and how MAANKAAL is designed to respond.

Pillar 1

Trauma Healing & Psychosocial Recovery

Planned
Problem

Conflict and climate shocks leave deep psychosocial wounds, while access to support is limited, especially outside cities.

What we do

Convene safe, trauma-informed group healing and dialogue spaces; train community facilitators; connect people to clinical and protection services through referral.

Intended outcome

Improved confidence, coping, and sense of safety; stronger community support networks.

Pillar 2

Peacebuilding & Social Cohesion

Planned
Problem

Conflict, terrorism, displacement, and inter-clan tensions weaken trust. Children and youth returning from armed-group involvement may face trauma, stigma, and barriers to safe reintegration.

What we do

Support inclusive community dialogue, peaceful dispute resolution, and safe reintegration pathways with child-protection, psychosocial, education, and rehabilitation services.

Intended outcome

Greater trust and cohesion, disputes handled peacefully, and safer reintegration for conflict-affected children and youth.

Pillar 3

Peace & Education

Planned
Problem

Young people who have grown up amid conflict have limited spaces to build peace skills, leadership, and a sense of shared future.

What we do

Engage youth in peace education and leadership development, with deliberate inclusion of young women.

Intended outcome

Increased youth confidence, leadership, and constructive participation in community life.

Pillar 4

Media, Storytelling & Advocacy

Planned
Problem

Survivor experiences are often told about survivors, not by them — sometimes in ways that risk re-traumatisation or loss of dignity.

What we do

Support ethical, consent-based survivor storytelling and produce survivor-led media and knowledge products for dialogue and advocacy.

Intended outcome

Survivor voice amplified ethically; informed public and policy dialogue.

Pillar 5

Climate Resilience & Disaster Recovery

Planned
Problem

Recurrent drought and flooding displace families and compound conflict-related stress, with little space to process climate-related loss.

What we do

Connect climate-affected survivors to healing and dialogue; document climate experiences; support community-led resilience conversations.

Intended outcome

Recognition of climate-related loss; stronger community resilience conversations.
